It’s that time of year where everyone is predicting the trends of 2024. As far as design is concerned, we know that we will always see two types of trends: the ones that stand the test of time, and the ones that don’t. As a design firm that focuses on sustainable design, we have taken the trend reports and curated a guide on how to incorporate these trends into your home in a way that will last for years to come - and in a way that you won’t get sick of by the end of 2024.

In 2024, we are continuing to focus on designing homes for our clients that reflect who they are, and that are designed to make their lives easier. As far as incorporating trends go, we’ve narrowed it down to three key areas to focus on:

Authenticity > Perfection

Since 2020, we are seeing people reach more and more for more authenticity and less perfection in all areas of life - and our homes are no exception! As we enter 2024, this mindset has a firm grip on all of us who are craving connection and embracing our truest selves. Here is how we see it reflected in our homes:

  • Thrifted and curated/collected items

  • Personalized artwork

  • Upcycled decor and furniture

  • Realistic minimalism - we want our necessities out of sight (the toaster, our shoes, the dog’s toys), but let’s keep the items that make us happy out for everyone to see. No one’s home is ever ‘picture perfect’ and we are ready to stop pretending

  • Handmade/imperfectly finished items

  • Embrace the kitsch

Colour is our Bestie

Say goodbye to neutral rooms - pops of colour and full-coloured rooms are here to stay. This isn’t a brand new concept (we’ve been incorporating this into clients homes for the past couple of years), but we will finally see this trend become more mainstream in 2024.

Whether it’s through paint on the walls or in furniture and decor, bringing colour back into our spaces is integral. Not only does it give your space more personality, but we can also utilize colour to manipulate how you will feel in the space (the only kind of manipulation we condone). If you want to learn more about how to use colour in your space, check out last month’s blog post.

  • Top colours we will see are dusty blues, rusts, greens, browns

Updated Finishes

Hard finishes are constantly being updated, and as we see in fashion, they are constantly coming in and out of style. At some point in time, the finishes in your home are going to go out of style - that’s just how trends work. So our advice is always to pick what YOU love - you’re the one spending the most time in the space, after all. If you’re renovating or building in 2024, here are some finishes to explore that will remain stylish for the next few years:

  • Chrome and silver

  • Aged brass

  • Slim shaker cabinets

  • Fluted materials (glass, paneling, tile)

  • Warm wood

  • Arches

  • Lived-in aged marble with heavy veining

Our Take on Trends

We continue to design with our three core values as the informant of every decision we make. As far as trends are concerned, we choose what fits with our values and aesthetic, and leave the rest. In every space we touch, things such as biophilic design, sourcing local when possible, and intentional, personal, choices are what drive the design. Trends that fit into our ethos are the ones that will make an impact, and mixing these in with other design elements and principals are what will create a timeless design.

If you want to make a change in your space in 2024 and don’t know where to start, we’d love to hear from you!
